Statement Regarding COVID-19 Vaccine
The following is for general information only and is not intended as specific medical advice.
Many patients are inquiring about the appropriateness of receiving any of the approved COVID-19 vaccines. While each patient’s situation is different, in general we are recommending most of our patients to receive the vaccine when it is available. Upon reviewing the available data for the vaccines, there does not appear to be any significant neurologic risk specific to our patient population.
Two particular groups of patients have expressed specific concerns: patients with multiple sclerosis and patients with a history of Guillian-Barre syndrome or CIDP.
Multiple Sclerosis
We generally agree with the statement published by National MS Society. In brief, patients with MS should receive the COVID-19 vaccine, regardless of their current disease status and regardless of whether they are currently on disease-modifying treatment for MS. For details, click on the above link.
Guillian-Barre Syndrome & CIDP
We generally agree with the statement published by the GBS/CIDP foundation. In brief, patients with a history of GBS or who have CIDP should receive the COVID-19 vaccine. This issue was, unfortunately, clouded by an initial comment by Dr. Anthony Fauci, in which he expressed concern regarding GBS patients and the vaccine. The GBS/CIDP foundation put out an open letter to Dr. Fauci, detailing the science behind their statements. Dr. Fauci then retracted his initial comments. For details, click the above links.
For questions regarding your specific situation, please call the office and/or make an appointment to speak with your doctor.
